Risto Vidakovic takes charge of first game with Maldives champions Maziya SRC against newly promoted Super United Sports.

Despite winning the last Dhivehi Premier League last May, it has been a turbulent time at Maziya RSC. It is only the fifth game of the season for the champions, yet Vidakovic is the third head coach to take charge of a game for the Green Boys. In July, Mohamed Nizam took charge of the side, but did not take charge of his first game until December due to COVID-19. He only took charge of three league games before handing in his resignation a week ago. Their last match -a draw against Da Grande- was overseen by assistant coach Ahmed Suzair.

Maziya fans will be hoping that Vidakovic can make a strong start to life in the Maldives but they will be buzzing to see such a manager join the side, one who has experience at the highest levels. His playing CV includes the likes of Red Star Belgrade, Real Betis and the Yugoslav national side. As a coach he has been the assistant manager for the Serbian national team as well as managing Cadiz CF in Spain, Honduran side Motagua and most recently, he led Phillipino side Ceres Negros to a ASEAN Zone finals of the AFC Cup.

Standing in the way of Risto and the Maldivian giants is a side at the other end of the spectrum in Maldivian football. Super United Sports are enjoying their first ever season in the top flight. The side that was started by a group of friends who played futsal together and was only formally founded five years ago have had a meteoric rise to the top of football in the Maldives. The culmination was a promotion last season to the Premier League having come second behind Valencia in the Second Division.

Having made it to the Premier League, Suspatis have made a great start to the season. The side from Machchangolhi have won one and drawn three matches since promotion and find themselves only two points behind Maziya who have also made an unbeaten start after four matches. While their main objective this season will be to avoid the bottom two places and relegation, having made such an excellent start, they will relish the opportunity to test themselves against the best in the league.

Like many other leagues and competitions around the world, the Dhivehi Premier League has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The season start was delayed by four months, but beyond the scheduling is the structure of the league itself. The Dhivehi Premier League usually consists of ten teams, eight of whom come from the main island Mathe and two other teams -most recently Foakaidhoo FC and Nilandhoo Sports Club- from other islands on the archipelago. Because of COVID-19 restrictions only sides from Male are allowed to participate in the league season and so Foakaidhoo and Nilandhoo are unable to participate and the league has been restricted to just the eight sides.
